During the seven weeks we have been working as summer interns in Data Respons R&D Services, we have been involved in four different projects, some more time-consuming than others. The initial days were mostly spent getting to know the office, IT equipment and our new colleagues, and starting a training program for new hires that refreshed embedded system development. Then we were assigned our projects.
Tord initially worked on the ongoing Shearwater-project, where he prepared system assembly of new prototypes, among other tasks. He also worked on requirements and test support, defining test goals, test cases, and verification methods.
At the same time, Sabina worked on one of Data Respons’ yearly sponsorships, the ‘Girl Tech Fest.’ This is an event aimed at increasing interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among girls from an early age in primary school.
Sabina and Tord also collaborated on developing a training program for the Rust programming language, intending to provide new employees with a solid foundational understanding.
The final and most extensive project was for Laerdal Medical, involving all summer interns. Erlend and Sigve spent most of their time automating tests and building an intuitive test application that could also be used in other projects. This application proved valuable when we were later tasked with testing units to be sent to the customer. In parallel, Tord conducted various hardware tests on the same units.
Although we had individual tasks, we maintained close collaboration with Data Respons project managers. Our fellow R&D engineers were inclusive and open, and the threshold for seeking help and getting good guidance from our mentors was low. Our tasks varied, so we worked both in the office and the lab. A faithful companion during this time has been the table tennis breaks – taking time for playing between heavy work tasks was important for us.
We have developed knowledge and skills through the highly relevant projects we have been involved in. We have experienced frustration and a sense of accomplishment. When we encountered challenges, we learned that there’s expertise and clever tips just around the corner. Usually, after a conversation with skilled colleagues or our faithful rubber duck, we gained a better overview of the challenge at hand.
Participating in a crucial testing phase of a product delivery taught us a lot about the importance of testing procedures and provided insights into what it takes to satisfy a customer.
Additionally, we have all seen remarkable improvement in our table tennis skills.
Sigve – «Working on a real client project and gaining insight into what it’s like to work in the consulting industry.»
Erlend – «Having the opportunity to work without fixed schedules and without the pressure of constant supervision has made this internship experience unique. I appreciated the freedom that allowed me to focus on the challenges and tasks ahead.»
Tord – «Being able to contribute to the success of client projects and gaining insight into how the industry operates.»
Sabina – «I have enjoyed that the colleagues are both welcoming and extremely skilled. It is always fun to come to work! »
As summer interns, we have had the opportunity to get to know each other well over these seven weeks. We feel warmly welcomed by the rest of the team and find the social atmosphere at work to be excellent. It feels like everyone has their place in the group, and it is easy to enjoy our everyday work. We also had our weekly jogging sessions before work, which was a fantastic way to start the day.
In addition to the tennis table, the office is equipped with shuffleboard, darts, Nintendo switch, and finally, a bar for the traditional ‘Gla’timen’! These are definitely elements that contribute to the social atmosphere.
Best regards,
Erlend, Sabina, Sigve, and Tord
